Who is Aki?-My Artist Statement

I moved to New York 2017 to study English and start a new life after retirement in Japan. After studying English in an ESL school for five years, I transferred to LaGuardia Community College. Through taking classes, I discovered my passion for digital design and my dream of creating my own brand.

Currently, drawing is my favorite medium. I’m now practicing hand-drawing illustrations by watching YouTube tutorials because I believe that hand-drawing stimulates my creativity and helps me improve my artistic skills.

My inspiration comes from Japanese culture, particularly my grandmother’s kimono life. Her heritage formed my sense of color and beauty.

Small things make me happy, like seeing the beautiful blue sky, cherishing wild flowers, feeling a gentle breeze on my cheek, or enjoying the warmth of the wind coming from my window. It’s kind of my life theme. So, most of my artwork includes elements of daily life and nature, such as flowers, leaves, and animals with neutral and pastel colors. I’m improving my illustration skills and my journey as an illustrator is just beginning and I’m excited to continue pursuing my dream.

Under Controle:My Appetite

My goal is to play tennis until I’m 80 years old, but sometimes I struggle to control my appetite, just like in this picture. I hope this image reminds me to stay mindful and avoid overeating.
